Marine biologist Peter Belli has 03:26.480 --> 03:28.720 studied manatees for decades. So this algae 03:41.920 --> 03:44.080 is reducing light down to the 03:44.080 --> 03:46.159 seagrasses, essentially smothering them 03:46.159 --> 03:48.400 and killing them. He says manatees need 03:48.400 --> 03:51.120 to eat nearly 100 lbs of vegetation a 03:51.120 --> 03:54.200 day. Between December 2020 and April 03:54.200 --> 03:57.560 2022, more than 1,200 manatees died of 03:57.560 --> 03:59.920 starvation. Most of them here in the 03:59.920 --> 04:01.439 northern part of the Indian River 04:01.439 --> 04:03.439 Lagoon. Just a couple of decades ago, 04:03.439 --> 04:05.360 the water in this Indian River Lagoon 04:05.360 --> 04:07.439 was crystal clear. You could easily see 04:07.439 --> 04:09.599 down to the bottom.
